What is MorphoCode™: a new language for understanding pattern making
Pattern making is not a set of formulae and lines. It is the way an idea becomes shape, volume and structure. MorphoCode™ was created to make it easier to see, understand and construct.

For many fashion students, there is still a gap that is difficult to understand between designing a garment and making it.
There is the fashion illustration.
Then there is the fabric.
Then it is sewn.
But what happens in between?
This is precisely where we turn to pattern making.
The pattern is what allows an idea drawn on a sheet of paper to become a three-dimensional object capable of interacting with the body.
Yet, for those approaching this discipline for the first time, pattern making is often presented through measurements, formulae, points, horizontal and vertical lines.
You learn how to draft before even understanding what you are constructing.
MorphoCode™ stems from this observation.
A different language for reading pattern making
MorphoCode™ is the language developed by 55SENSI to read and understand pattern making through the relationships between body, volume, shape and pattern, before they are translated into construction rules.
It does not replace technique.
It does not eliminate measurements.
It does not eliminate the pattern.
It changes the point from which we begin to understand it.
Before drafting a line, we try to understand why that line exists.
Before applying a formula, we observe which shape we want to achieve.
Before correcting a pattern, we try to understand what is happening to the garment.
“MorphoCode™ does not teach how to draft first. It first teaches what to observe.”
The pattern is drafted in 2D. But it thinks in 3D.
A pattern is drafted on a flat surface, but what it constructs is three-dimensional.
This is one of the fundamental ideas from which MorphoCode™ starts.
The body occupies space. It has volumes, proportions and shapes.
The pattern, by contrast, is represented in two dimensions because the flat surface allows measurements, relationships and construction to be controlled.
But those lines are not the final result.
They are information.
Once assembled, they become volume.
This is why we can think of pattern making as the architecture of the garment.
Just as an architectural design contains the information needed to construct a space, the pattern contains the information needed to construct a shape around the body.
Volume comes before the line
Let us take one of the most important words in pattern making: ease.
For beginners, it may seem simply like a measurement to add.
But ease is not just a number. It determines how much space exists between body and garment and contributes to the way that garment fits, moves and creates its own volume.
The same applies to a dart, a seam, a grainline or a cutting line.
If we observe them only as marks on the pattern, we learn to reproduce them.
If we understand what they do, we begin to design.
This is the difference that MorphoCode™ aims to make visible.
Observe before correcting
This approach becomes even more important when something does not work.
An uneven hem, tension, a volume that hangs poorly or an unwanted fold are signals.
But what we see does not necessarily coincide with the cause of the problem.
A defect visible at one point can be caused by a decision made elsewhere in the construction.
For this reason, in the MorphoCode™ language, observing does not yet mean understanding.
Reading serves to distinguish what we see from the structural relationship that generated it.
- Observe
- Interpret
- Intervene
Do not correct by trial and error.
First understand why the garment behaves that way, and only then decide where to intervene.
It is a principle applicable to traditional paper pattern making, CAD pattern making and 3D simulation.
A language for those who are learning. And for those already working.
MorphoCode™ also stems from 55SENSI's experience with a new generation of fashion students.
Young people accustomed to thinking in images, connections and immediate information often encounter a technical language they perceive as distant.
Some reach higher education without yet clearly understanding the role of the pattern in the process from design to product.
The problem, therefore, is not to make pattern making less technical.
It is to make technique understandable.
But MorphoCode™ is not intended only for those starting out, as in the programmes at the Academy.
For a pattern maker, it also means naming the relationships that experience often leads them to recognise intuitively.
For a fashion designer, it means better understanding what happens between design and product.
For those working digitally, it means not confusing the tool with the process: CAD and CLO3D allow us to construct and verify, but first we need to know what to observe and why.
From formula to understanding
Pattern making needs measurements, rules and precision.
MorphoCode™ does not seek to eliminate them.
It seeks to prevent them from becoming the starting point without their meaning being understood.
Because knowing a formula does not necessarily mean understanding a shape.
And knowing how to reproduce a pattern does not yet mean knowing how to read it.
“First understand, then construct.”
Body, volume, ease, proportion, balance, direction, structure: the words of pattern making cease to be isolated definitions and become ways of observing how a garment is constructed and how it behaves.
In Vocabolario MorphoCode™, this idea is developed progressively: definitions first help us understand what to observe, and then how the elements of construction work together.
Pattern making seen with new eyes
MorphoCode™ stems from a very simple question:
“Can we teach people to see pattern making before asking them to practise it?”
For 55SENSI, the answer is yes.
It means starting from body and volume, understanding the shape we want to achieve and using the pattern as the tool through which that shape can be designed, controlled and constructed.
It does not mean simplifying pattern making by removing its complexity.
It means making its logic readable.
Because when we understand what a line produces, that line ceases to be just a mark on a flat surface.
It becomes part of the shape.
MorphoCode™
Observe. Understand. Construct.
